When Depressed Poem by Yiyan Han

When Depressed

Rating: 5.0

When depressed, I felt
Everyday is dark even though sky is blue
And sun is bright
Everywhere is grey even though spring cherry
Is in full pink bloom, summer roses open like a flame
White autumn lilies display their starburst elegance
And winter irises show off their purple skirts

When depressed, I felt
The life has lost its meaning even though morning birds
Sing joyfully in the rising sun, people around
Are sweated blood in day to earn sterling pound
And moon changes its shape at night from half
To full, and says 'cheer up, cheer up, you human soul'

When depressed, I didn't want
To wake up and always liked
To stay in a warm comfy bed. I thought
If the death is like the warmth of my bed
Then it's the best end, yet strangely there was
No thought of suicide

A friend said 'don't feel depressed and everyday
Say to yourself in the mirror: I'm happy'
How could I face the mirror as I even didn't want
To see myself? I didn't want to do anything
As I had no energy nor interest. So I put on fat
My poor tired soul was then in a black hole

Depression is more common than one thinks
No matter if you're rich or poor, celebrity or nobody
And old or young, depression is a dark abyss
Of despair, sadness and lifeless. In my experience
The way to come out is to connect, contact, speak and express
And to exchange each other's worries, sadness and sorrow
And keep praying to God, His light shining through you

Psychologists would help if wouldn't just to describe
Drugs, and they themselves weren't clueless in a dark
Activity centres would help if talked to patients as friend
Local community centres would help if they existed
Family, friends, and the society all do matter. The dearest
And nearest are the solid rock for the grappling hook
Of climbing in the abyss of depression

Sigh! It is really tiresome and depressing that I and perhaps you cannot rate poems anymore because some messed up computer thingee can only respond to a polite request to vote by demanding we sign in again and again and again time after time after time. Really getting tiresome. I wish I could rate this poem- you really delved into your subject matter.

Sky is very blue and every day is darker than imagination. Depression is just like darkness that provokes mind. This is an amazing poem beautifully penned. We need to keep mind in God to gain light and strength....10

The ignorance surrounding depression is sadly appalling, by highlighting it you help others, well done.
