To Be Innocent Again Poem by Gerry Freeman

To Be Innocent Again

Everyday I learn the lines,
Trying to play my part
Like I should, oh but if I could
I'd go back to the start,
Because I would give anything
To be as you knew me then.
Oh yes, I would give anything
To be innocent again.

We begin with certainty,
All is clear in our sight.
Gradually it gets hard to see,
Hard to do what is right.
And so I would give anything
To go back to way back when,
When I might have done anything,
Become anything, my friend.
Oh yes, I would give anything
To be innocent again.

Love arrives, there is no blame,
Life is all it should be.
One by one, love's transgressions come,
We all wound, we all bleed.
That's why I would give anything
To be innocent again.
Oh yes, I would give anything,
Anything you could name.
I would give anything
To be innocent again.
