Opium Of Optimism Poem by Alam Sayed

Opium Of Optimism

Rating: 5.0

While birds are singing, crematorium business is booming.
Loneliest poets know its meaning.
Mountaineers can see the tops of mountains;
Only the clouds can see the internal bleeding.
Loners of the loneliest road understand
That the road has a language of its own
And sometimes like an enormous snake it moans,
And it has close ties with snakes.
Intimacy of roads and snakes are deeper than you think,
And with annihilation bombs and guns havea closer link.
Opium of optimism will not avert the tragedy,
Or rather, it will make the process less sneaky and more speedy,
For optimism couldn't save pretty Dresden
And indifferent was the heaven.
Slaughterhouse of history remains forever hungry,
Kurt Vonnegut perceived well the psychology of killing spree.
Though he himself was imprisoned underground,
Though irony was paramount,
The crematorium was fully operational above,
Because heroes too drink from the same crazy cup.

Nature has definitely ceased to intervene
And men are ravaging and raping her green.
Therefore, pacification of nature will bring no salvation,
Instead she will perform her own cremation.
In fact, you will never pacify her,
But you may love her as she is,
And she will respond with a gentler breeze,
And you may change her through the act of love,
Perhaps with a tenderer passion she will move.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM

i read KV's novel in college, but i don't 'remember' the story. ;) this is a SERIOUS-topic poem! right? maybe too convoluted** for me to read again completely. maybe that's why i don't recall KV's story. ** i see that one definition (technical) of convolution is coiled. is that where you thought of snake? ? Opium of optimism and poison of pessimism, if I am given a chance to choose, I shall choose the opium.

Thanks for your thought provoking comment. I may choose the same. The poem criticises naive optimism not optimism by itself. I prefer optimism through activism. I tried to respond earlier but PH did not allow me. The website is always troublesome in my locality.
