The Building. Poem by Michael Walker

The Building.

Rating: 5.0

The expansive building on the corner
of two city streets has some history.
It used to be a hotel in the past,
where you walked in through automatic doors

To reception, down halls of anticipation
to the friendly rooms on one side:
no room for second-guessing this time,
no need to either after a night's relaxation.

I am in the same building today,
but everything around me is different.
Receptionists are there for the clients
who are consulting mobile phones.

I have to wait, so I ask myself:
'Why are there so many sicknesses and diseases? '
'What negative forcecaused such distress,
in the girl who walked out in tears? '

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The building is the doctors' surgery, which I used to go to in Auckland. Someone told me that it used to be a hotel, which is quite amusing when you think about it. I have not forgotten the young woman who was sobbing as she left the room.
I do wonder why doctors' waiting rooms are so crowded always and what causes sickness in general.

'Why are there so many sicknesses and diseases? ' 'What negative force causes such distress, in the girl who walked out in tears? ' the last line caught me especially, history written into the life of a hotel, the kaleidoscopic parade of faces passing through, personal journeys, travel joy morphs in time into transformation, entropy catches buildings places people in nets of time

You must be the only one who noticed this double-sided poem-one building with two different functions, of which there are many examples of course. Thanks again.
