St Kabeer's Couplets 18: Caught In Greed's Glue Clout

Rating: 5.0

Fluttering wings and greed weary,
Poor fly is stuck in jaggery,
Caught in greed's gluey clout,
Struggling hard to get out,
Says, greed is worst of enemy.

Given here under is the original couplet in Hindi script, and its transliteration in English Roman.

मक्खी गुड में गडी रहे, पंख रहे लिपटाये,
हाथ मले और सिर ढूंढे, लालच बुरी बला ये।

Makkhī guđ mein gađī rahe, pankha rahe lipaţāye;
Hath male aur sir đhunđhe, lālach burī balā ye.

A fly that could not resist sweet jaggery, got caught in its sticky syrup, struggling hard to get free without luck. Overwhelmed by greed, it failed to realize that it would get stuck there and might die. Kabeer demonstrates how dangerous greed is.

A superb Quatrain with brilliant thoughts. So very true. Greed is a sin that can take us to darkness. Great imagery and rhyme. On to my Poem List.

Thanks dear poet, but I feel a bit uncomfortable in that I usurp all the credit for the brilliance of the original poet.
