St Kabeer's Couplets 17: Bow To Guru Before God Poem by Aniruddha Pathak

St Kabeer's Couplets 17: Bow To Guru Before God

Rating: 5.0

Guru and god both standing fore,
To whose feet should I bow?
Let glory dwell at Guru's door
That helped me know Him now.

Given here under is the original couplet in Hindi script, and its transliteration in English Roman.

गुरु गोविन्द दोनों खड़े, काके लागु पाए,
बलिहारी गुरु आपनो, गोविन्द दियो मिलाय।

Guru govinda dono khađe, kāke lāgu pāye;
Balihārī guru āpano, govinda diyo milāye.

Kabeer is trying to explain the key role played by guru, the master who takes you under his able wings. If God and guru both are standing in front, whom to bow first? You must first bow to the guru who enabled you to know God.

God is the creator of all. There will be no Guru without Him. It is on this premise that we must give respect first to whom lies the greatest power. A well written Quatrain worth to ponder about.

Fine, you also feel so.. you may read my response under Jez's. But I think God will be the last one to want you to bow to him because he is the most powerful. I appreciate your large heart to still say a few good words about the quatrain.
