Sorrow Poem by Lily Ives

Sorrow

What is the meaning of connection
when we feel alone and sorrowful?
If consciousness lives in you and me,
and in the trees rustling their feathered greens -
When you cry, do I also weep?
Does the tree oozing sap also grieve?
Are you separate from me?
When you lay in your bed
with insomnia cradling your aching soul,
Perhaps I shall awaken from my dream at that same hour,
overcome with sadness wiping tears from my eyes -
I wonder then, would melancholy belong to you, or I?
When the silver sky cries and the wind quivers in the cold by my door,
Will you also suffer and will it hurt?
Maybe at that time, it will also storm in my tender heart -
And we shall lament together, even when we are apart.
