Sarojini Naidu: A Portrait
Sarojini Naidu was born in 1879
In a Bengali Hindu family at Hyderabad, India
She is popularly known as ‘Nightingale of India'
For her delightful verses with social impact and influence
She maintained a high political profile as she was the first
Woman Governor of the Republic of India
The focus of her writing was principally
On ‘nature', ‘love', ‘patriotism' and ‘social issues'
She was the pioneer to raise her voice against
Inter-caste and inter-regional marriage with the mission
Of uniting the people of India together regardless of religion
The style of her penning is simple
With apt use of poetic devices at places
Use of metaphor and Irony was the strength of her poetry.
Her poem entitled, "Palanquin Bearers" stands as
A class representing the hallmark of Indian English literature
She is featured here in Poem hunter as a great classical poet
And constantly occupying her place among top 25 poets of the world!
She breathed her last on 2 March 1949 leaving behind
All her invaluable contributions to the field of English literature

Sarojini Naidu is hardly remembered these days by her maiden name " Chattopadhyay". Her role in Indian Independence Struggle and Indian National Congress is part of history. She was the first woman president of Congress
