Russia-Ukraine War - May Humanity And Compassion Prevail Poem by Bernedita Rosinha Pinto

Russia-Ukraine War - May Humanity And Compassion Prevail

Where will they run now, where will they hide
how far will they flee, how far will they escape?
where was foresight, where was caution
when the winds of the war were gathering speed,
when the hands of hostility were tightening its grip?

And as war began, eyes filled with intense fears and tears
as every day that unfolds tells of injuries and deaths
which no one had expected, which no one had anticipated
yet war in all its ferocity and velocity started its devastation.

No one estimated the atrocities this war could impose
no one volunteered to sit and think of jeopardies and damages
but when war walks with its feet into another domain
it brushes its shoulders against its rival with enmity and hatred.

The ocean of peace roars and then steers away from its center,
the mind of hope looms around the periphery of constant fear;
everyone keeps hovering, rushing and fleeing from homes
they hope to get to safety to avoid the bombs and bullets.

War has no speed limit and it keeps racing its pace and plan,
the momentum of anxiety keeps escalating every pulsebeat
it makes people to run and hide or to drive to safety
so that they can survive the ordeal and harsh fatalities.

And as war imposed its wrath so rapidly and ruthlessly;
where did compassion hide its face and its features
why did God forget His duty of mercy to humanity
as parents with children in their arms kept worrying all night?

And the old and the sick keep worrying and praying
while the young soldiers keep fighting and dying;
brothers and sisters keep moving away from family unity
when they decide to leave the country and run to safety.

And as women turn into widows though young and lively
families swivel to refugee-status as they reach another country;
is this what they were born to face and undergo
when life around them was so beautiful and wonderful
just a few days ago, just a few hours ago, just a few years ago?
