Pirates Of Inheritance Poem by Bernedita Rosinha Pinto

Pirates Of Inheritance

I will stand by the Laws of Truth
and every pillar of justice I will embrace
to tell you whether you deserve what you seek
or whether you don't deserve your inheritances;
you have never done your duties
you have never held their hands
when they could not walk;
you have never fed them a meal
whether they were young or old;
every reward comes out of diligence
and every recognition comes out of affection
but they lived alone, died alone
while you made merry all along;
and those who cared for them were we
those who stood by them until their very end were we;
so gloriously, so respectfully we adhered
to our tasks, our endeavours
to help them overcome their solitude.
And as time took its weary route
thro' their long and lonely life
thro' those days of hardships and strife
hunger and penury, thirst and emptiness
just one sister was their embodiment
of love and grace which she shared with them
making sunshine to never leave their days;
when they called out to her or needed her
above all dedication she always prioritized
her time for them and their smallest dream.
And when you will sit there to consume
what you did not deserve, you will ask yourself
where was me, where was that prodigal brother
who washed off his hands from responsibilities
of looking after an aging father,
how could a sister until her last breath
assign and apportion her love to those brothers
without seeking anything in return for herself?
Where was sacrifice hiding its pledge
when you neither your father never cared for them?
and as you will sit there to enjoy their inheritances
which you never deserved
your guilt will dissolve in your conscience
but your conscience will never liberate itself
from piracy, default and grave negligence.
