Life's Bittersweet Irony Poem by Megan Colligan

Life's Bittersweet Irony

So take me by the hand
And teach me to understand
The depths of you, the deepest parts of you
Your battle scars, your bruises black and blue
The history of your heart
That beats memories of life
Through veins of melancholy

Let me see you

Each broken, wounded part of you

And piece you back together
Through the tether of our loneliness
This phony, stupid consolation and sweet validation
That bleeds between us

Because we are soldiers hooked on neediness
And lavish in the greediness of love
So shoot me down and test the strength of my armor
While your gun's still full
And archetype me the assailant
Under your assault and pull

Pull the strings of my heart
And make me wiser, make me older, make me stronger
Until every weakness, every uncertainty, every calamity falls away
Unstripping the armour of insecurity and inauthenticity
The bittersweet irony of becoming who I was meant to be...
