Life Is Fine

I went down to the river,
I set down on the bank.
I tried to think but couldn't,
So I jumped in and sank.

I came up once and hollered!
I came up twice and cried!
If that water hadn't a-been so cold
I might've sunk and died.

But it was Cold in that water! It was cold!

I took the elevator
Sixteen floors above the ground.
I thought about my baby
And thought I would jump down.

I stood there and I hollered!
I stood there and I cried!
If it hadn't a-been so high
I might've jumped and died.

But it was High up there! It was high!

So since I'm still here livin',
I guess I will live on.
I could've died for love--
But for livin' I was born

Though you may hear me holler,
And you may see me cry--
I'll be dogged, sweet baby,
If you gonna see me die.

Life is fine! Fine as wine! Life is fine!

I like the way he approached this topic with humor. Had me chuckling while he was putting his point across. Excellent!

So much of life, including what passes for love, attempts to rush us to our demise; but blessed be the sweet soul who finds life is indeed for the living of it. Perhaps it takes walking the fine edges of life's demise for one to secure the vision of the meaning. My old cowboy hat's off in honor of the great poet from whom these words arise.

The system wouldn't let me finish my comment because it was too long, so I will try to finish it here:
The three stanzas I mentioned in the book were like this (and remember that they are also supposed to be in Italics) :

    But it was
    Cold in that water!
    It was cold!

    But it was
    High up there!
    It was high!

    Life is fine!
    Fine as wine!
    Life is fine!

A fine poem by Langston Hughes, but would have been even better if Poem Hunter had kept the original form. I have a book of poems by Hughes, and it shows the third, sixth, and ninth stanzas of this poem in Italics (which I can't do here, and maybe neither can PH, and that's why they didn't do it?)
