Mother To Son

Well, son, I'll tell you:
Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.
It's had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor—
Bare.
But all the time
I'se been a-climbin' on,
And reachin' landin's,
And turnin' corners,
And sometimes goin' in the dark
Where there ain't been no light.
So, boy, don't you turn back.
Don't you set down on the steps.
'Cause you finds it's kinder hard.
Don't you fall now—
For I'se still goin', honey,
I'se still climbin',
And life for me ain't been no crystal stair.

Wonderful advice to anyone from the wonderful pen of Langston Hughes. Hughes' poetry is so full of strong imagery and good, reasoned advice. No wonder he is one of the great American poets!

    1. I think the speaker is the mother because she is talking to the son about how she grew up my evidence is in the begining she said " well son ill tell you" and the mom is just explaining how she grew u 2. the speaker (mother) is talking to the son my evidence is in the poem it states " Well son let me tell you" she is telling the son how she grew up.

I think this poem talks about the hardship and discrimination the the mother had to grow up with. But then she says that her son shouldn't give up and that she is still moving forward.
