I Love You Abuelo Poem by Aerin Andre

I Love You Abuelo

I love you abuelo
That's what I wanted to say
You see if I ever called my grandfather else
He would be more likely to hit me in the face
Now that's what I wanted to say before
Before abuelo died
See I was at school when he passed and 'my mother'
She didn't let me say goodbye
See I put her name in air quotes because I consider her my mother
Like I consider Dr. Dre to be an actual doctor

Now while I was at school
Ring Ring
Hello Elizabeth (it's what I called her)
She tells me it's my grandfathers last moment
I say put me on speaker and let me say goodbye
She agrees and says she'll call me right back
Now me being the dumbass I am
I wait at my phone for a call I never receive

See if I had a chance to say goodbye to my grandfather
That's exactly what I would have said
I would have said I love you abuelo
But I never received the chance
And I am still waiting for the call that I know I'll never get
