I Am Person Poem by Maor Lain

I Am Person

I Am Person

I am person
I have no people
I used to be people
When I played along
Had fun
Mind no time
But I left my people
No reason other than
My closer people were far
And I just wanted to get closer
I took the bus, traveled miles
But I never forgot my people
I got closer to my closer
People, while leaving my now former people
One day that I looked back
I looked and looked and
Could not find my people
What happened, where’d they go?
I look at the same place I’d left
Them, decade ago, but they were
Not my people, not the ones I’d known
You see my former people were
Killing other people that were not
Their people
It is plain and simple
A regional divide that costs
Other people to cross, with their life
Until they are no longer people
People killing other people under one flag
Divided against all that stand to cross my former people.
I don’t blame them, not at all
Because some are good, some are
Trying to make it, my former people
I won’t strain you with
Ethical divides that serve
To no more ends than punishing
An outcome, for the source people’s doing.
The source people inflating your misery
‘Till you’re out of choice, and left
To wonder, am I feeding my people?
You see, I used to be people,
Now, not at all,
I am person through it all
And of my closer people
I’m with them
But I can’t be people
Until my former people can come through
Until they tear regional divides, imagine
And into their people, my former people,
Can incorporate the other people, for they too, are people.
