From My Attic, Dreaming Poem by Anji Carter

From My Attic, Dreaming

This is my room.
Here in my attic haven I am queen.
But also it is yours, for you are friends, and share my dreams.
Come share with me this glass house deep within the sea,
Watch the sun that shines on us beneath the spreading tree.
See the walls so comforting, colours to draw you in.
To wash away the yesterdays, and what you might have been.
You are 'You' now, just as I am 'I'.
We are strong. In this identify.
Forgotten are the pains of all the dreams unrealised,
Remember only now, and things you touch and recognise.
Put away from you the memories that hurt and bring you pain.
They are dead now, but you can live again.

Today is our day!
Tomorrow never comes,
And Yesterday has beard of grey, forget it, it has gone.
Irrelevant are all the things we can no longer change.
Allow your mind to open up, concede to it, its range.
Like many that have dwelt before we're finding in ourselves,
A depth of which we're unaware, unless we stop to delve.
As an incubus the soul must needs unfold,
Nourishing itself so it may grow, from all that it is told.
Teach your soul and aid its growth with joy and love, not tears!
Send it strong into the world, unhampered by past fears.

This is my room,
Here in my attic haven I am queen.
Forgetting all the pains of past, and all the might have beens.
It's yours too, for you are friends and share my dreams.
Here you can be what you are, and not just what you seem.
Come in, sit down, I'll close the door, shut away the world outside.
Here within my house of glass we've found a place to hide.
A place to come to terms with life, and all that it demands.
To take our lives, re-shape our lives, it lies within our hands.

This is my room.
Here in my attic haven I am queen.
But also it is yours, for you are friends, and share my dreams.
See the walls so comforting, colours to draw you in.
To wash away the memories of all the might-have-beens.
Here we'll debate the nights away, put all the world to rights.
We'll change the face of things to come through long, hot summers nights.
We'll talk of 'Cats and sealing wax, Of cabbages and kings'
Of strife that's rife, of love and life, and countless other things.
We'll share our hopes, our fears, our dreams, we'll give each other strength.
With music we'll sustain ourselves throughout the summers length.
We'll travel to our autumns' on a rich kaleidoscope,
Of colours felt, within our souls, their warmth will give us hope.
For all the warmth is ours to give, it comes from what we share.
Our friendship, and the lasting bonds we're forging will be there.

Come in now.
The winter's far away.
If we're to build our haven strong we cannot waste today.
It's this day, tomorrow and the rest,
These are the ones that really count,
These ones will be our best!
This is my room.
Here in my attic haven I am queen.
But also it is yours, for you are friends and share my dreams.
It is our room,
Way up here in the sky.
We'll laugh and give, and learn to live
The summer of our lives!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poem was written from an attic flat when I was in my twenties. I am so glad I wrote it, because now that I am older and in the autumn of my life, it takes be back to those long hot summer days and nights and the days of my youth, and helps to dispel the aches and pains of my approaching winter.
