Cup Of Tea Poem by Jayne Doe

Cup Of Tea

Rating: 5.0

I close my eyes
Travel back in time
To a kitchen where both of them are.
Grandfather's sitting
Eating and drinking
Cup of tea and biscuits to match.
Grandmothers cooking
And keeps on looking
To make certain everyone's well.
Orange and yellow
Is the old radio
Shouting music, classical no doubt.
The time is quite early
Before eight, surely
The parents in bed can be found.
I open my eyes
In the present I find
Grandmother alone on the couch.
No music is playing
And she keeps on saying
'I can't believe he's gone'.
She sips her tea
Quite quietly
The radio is off, not on.
It's not too late
Perhaps past eight
and everyone's up in the house.
We all try to tell
If grandmother's well
As she nods off to sleep once more.
If she were on her own
She'd answer the phone
With TV loudly hiding the silence.
For she cannot bear
If she were to hear
The lack of her loved ones around.
I hear her speak
Of getting weak
And lost abilities that once were hers
I keep on a smile
For quite a while
But a tear is hidden inside.
I watch while she sleeps
On the couch in a heap
Making sure her tea doesn't spill.
When she puts the cup down
I know it's safe now
To rest my weary mind.
So I close my eyes
Travel back in time
To a kitchen where both of them are.

Beautiful poem. Yes in today's world when one of the spouse is gone one could expect a loud T. V. And a drowsy grandmother. That too if any body cares to visit. A very sensitive poem and lovely expressions from a grandchild. Thanks for sharing.
