A Living Image Of Me Poem by Winnie Akinyi

A Living Image Of Me

I am that child rejected and forgotten
By one paid to look after me
I am that child beaten and broken
With no knowledge of ABC

I am that child driven out of school
For fees heaped unpaid
Amongst my peers I'm now a fool
I'm only good as a housemaid

I am that child sent to the streets
To hawk and fend for the elders
I am that child that sadness greets
As I bend iron for the welders

I am that child turned into a wolve
Ready to tear and destroy
I am that child no longer a dove
The fist of iron I now employ

I am that beast ready to revolt
Against the powers that be
I will strike with lightening and thunderbolt
Making them no longer sit at table for tea
