When What Protects Is Lost

Lying in bed
nearly asleep
one leg unprotected
by the soft sheets

At a closed window
the curtains scuffle.
Along the floor
there is a light ruffle.

The devilish presence
scurried along
hooting and howling
all along.

I frantically tried
to cover my leg
hoping the presence
would soon be at bay

Claws were flying.
Skin was ripping.
Not a single beat,
this creature was skipping

The red liquid
was pouring down.
Flesh and bone
were to be found.

Slowly, not quickly,
he dragged me away.
The covers that protected
were no longer in his way

All hope was lost.
All hope was gone.
Was there really a point
if this was my fate all along?
