Words Well Worth 32: Nuisance Draws Reverence
A man mighty, how so great,
If no nuisance can create,
Li'le respect he'd beget,
Tuskers, nor beasts so regal,
Nor even great eagle,
It's cobra that gets it all.

Transliteration of the subhāśhita along with the meanings of Sanskrit words is given as under:
akŗta upadravah kashchit mahān api na pujyate |
archayanti narā nāgam na tārkshyam na gaja ādikam ||
a-kŗta-: (one who does)not create/raise
upadravah: trouble; nuisance, calamity
kashchin mahān api: even howsoever great, mighty
napujyate: (is)never respected/worshipped
archyanti: (people)worship/propitiate
narāh: people, men
nāgam: a cobra (who can bite and create trouble)
na tārkśhyam: (but)not an eagle (can kill this trouble maker, but not dangerous)
na gaja: nor an elephant, (a great/noble animal)
ādikam: or others, and the like
