Why I Became A Peer-Helper Poem by Safiyyah Manjra

Why I Became A Peer-Helper

So they asked me why I became a peer helper?
The answer was simple because I genuinely didn't want to see students suffer.
Any longer.

Am I exaggerating?
When I say suffer, does it sound a bit too demeaning?
Little do they know mental suffering or physical suffering,
These students are ongoing.

They say University isn't for everybody.
How can this be?
Isn't higher education itself a glory.
Why wouldn't an individual want to strive for that so they themselves can see?

What I am saying is if I can help, then why not?
Why would I let another student struggle with untying a tight knot?
The life lesson of being kind and helpful to others is something which I haven't forgot.

(continued) ............... i applaud your helping others. it is a fine thing to do, even if not all those you 'help' profit from it as i assume you wish. i too have been a peer-helper..........with adults with mental illness and children and adults in literacy programs. now i limit myself to supportive, friendly calls to a couple of males with 'mental illness', and to volunteer work in the local library. it helps others AND me as well! to MyPoemList. bri ;)

(continued) .......... i never went back to school and never missed having a degree! i made some friends in college, but most of my life has been 'successful'; and has had little to do with my 'higher education' experiences. i met my first of 4 wives in college. :) (continued) ..............

favorite lines: (for the thought expressed, and the wording, and the rhyme) Why would I let another student struggle with untying a tight knot? The life lesson of being kind and helpful to others is something which I haven't forgot. (continued) ..........
