Thirty Pieces Of Silver Poem by Nkosilathi Zinyane

Thirty Pieces Of Silver

Thirty pieces of Silver

The urge is great
But loyalty even greater
Will there be any lifting of the dagger
That plunges into the depths of your heart
When one does well?
Could it the jealousy or is it pleasure
That makes you seek for this shining silver.
Would your laughter rise in the middle of the night
When all else stirs not
And disturb the owls that are glaringly hunting
When you see one who dared trust you
Crumble to mix with the dust
The origins of man
Never knowing that the satisfaction is ephemeral
That nothing in this world ever satisfies

Will you forever choose to slumber whilst others are working
Just because you have mastered the art of making them fall
When to trust in you they dare
All the seeds that they would have planted
Do fail to germinate
And when they ask why
You smile into their faces and say
You dug them overnight and roasted them
For migrating wild pigs
Where do you get the energy?
To destroy what others are building
Whilst not building what you may for yourself

The days are many but your drum still beats
And when again you have betrayed
Your mouth dripping the blood you spilled
Just when your pride is at its peak
I will look into your eyes and ask you to remember
Do enjoy your thirty pieces of Silver

A gripping poem, telling of the awfulness of betrayal in exchange for fleeting gain, when one should rather seek the wealth that lasts. A great verse!
