The War Game Of Chess Poem by Bernedita Rosinha Pinto

The War Game Of Chess

The game is on
the fame is on,
two players playing the game of war
just like a game of chess;
the grandmasters are two of them
from two different countries
one is Zelly, the other is Putty,
they are the Kings;

it is months they are playing,
moving forward and backward
trying to defeat each other;
others come to their aid
the knights of UK, France, US,
and all the neighboring countries;
they are like the knights and rooks
they are like bishops and pawns
they all work to assist the Grandmasters
in safeguarding their forts;
and they all enthusiastically hope
that one of their friends win;

suddenly the grandmaster Putty moves on
to a new square of invasion
and a barrage of missiles and bombs
start to fall on that new city;
though the main players blame each other,
one claims vast damages to the country
other claims satisfaction of retaliation and conquest;

and as both keep moving their pawns
trying to keep the game of war going,
so much of destruction everywhere,
the apartments have fallen
the cities have been scorched by explosions;
people have died in thousands
but the war game is still on and continues;

it is like chess with guns and war tanks,
with bombs and missiles
that keep moving front and back
to keep the action and challenge on;
it is said - all is fair in love and war
but what is fair in this war?
what game is this which is going on
for months and years
and why is humanity missing?
