The Snail Poem by Jasbir Chatterjee

The Snail

Rating: 2.8

Your easy laughter
Your jokes and smiles
And your jovial manner
Makes me feel so good, so comfortable…
And like a snail
I crawl
Out towards you…

But the ways of the world
And the complexities
Of the human mind
Make me feel so apprehensive, so terrified…
And like a snail
I keep
My shell handy, very close to myself….

To retreat into just in case
your soothing smile
changes into a devilish sneer
and your friendly hand
stretches itself out
to kill,
to snuff the very life out of me.

'And like a snail I crawl Out towards you…' - A lovely expression, couldn't be better!

Look at the opposites of human nature occurring at the same time and within the same relationships. What an awful contrast. It reminds me of Ghalib when he says- Usi ko dekh kar jeete hain, jis zalim pe dam nikle (Isn't it an irony that we live by seeing the one for whom we are ready to sacrifice our life) . It is no doubt a wonderful piece of poetry. Thanks.
