The Psychology Of Art Poem by Dennis Ryan

The Psychology Of Art

November 1,2007

"For Freud, the way we love reflects the entire history of our development."
Matthew von Unwerth, FREUD'S REQUIEM

The arts tell us lives lost are worth redeeming in spite of ourselves,
our sometimes shabby loves. So we do our best not to betray ourselves,
and them, a second time: we might remember things Freud said, certain Greek myths,
Odysseus navigating Hades, for example, any number of things which constitute
a record of love in the genes—the way we love—and those true loves that truly bind us.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The speaker of the poem in trying to better understand the process of grieving realizes it is incredibly difficult to end the grieving process because in so doing, we have to let go of that person for when we are grieving, which creates guilt at the letting go.
