The Magical Alley Poem by The Muse

The Magical Alley

Rating: 5.0

The cheerful beggar stood in the alley
Never a frown had he
Day in and day out he tarried the wayfarer
And asked for coins to see
He wished them good luck
And hugged them tight
With all his love and might

The passer-bys avoided his gaze
They didn't want to be suffocated in the embrace
They avoided him like plague
His aims back then seemed very vague

A mild maiden watchedhim warily
Her purse of coins she tightened around her waist
She walked swiftly passed and did not glance
Lest he took over and made her dance
Her home needed care
Of heavenly pleasures she was unaware

Years passed by and she was now up in years
As a wizened widow, she merely held in her tears
Her kith and kin and flown the roost
She had no one to her morals boost
She passed by hurriedly down the alley
Yearning for a friendly voice
When bellowed thebeggar
Hello dear Ma'am in his rasping voice

Hastily, she undid her bags
Rolled out the gingerbread from between the rags
Shaped like a home for a child on Christmas morn
The stable shone with surprising calm
She thought of the love the child would get
The shelter from the cold we could never forget
She gave up her last bread of
corn
And walked smiling to the morn

She hearkened again to his call warily
Her years of control slipping invariably
He held her in his arms tight
Squeezed the sadness off her eyes
She glowed that moment from within
She looked the beggar was no more to be seen.

He had transformed to a supernatural being.
His robes shone now
His face aglow
He wasn't human he wasn't slow
She was welcomed to his kingdom now
She gave up all her Earthly pains and coins
She was a pure maiden again by choice.
