Surmise Poem by Oluwatobi Olaide

Surmise

Rating: 5.0

They call it signs and wonders
SIGH, I wonder.
They pray for miracles the worse uncover
They say it runs in the blood
I asked, when it clots does it mean race is over?
It could be strong, feeble, good, bad, better or worse
Traditions comes with scare or hope
They say if you drink from it YOU DIE
We fear it's true, some argue its fallacy
Only a few wants to dare
Others say it's only a scare just to stay clear.
Could it be a way of enforcing a belief, WHO KNOWS?
Hands tied with legs, HAS YOUR BELIEF SET YOU FREE?
What's the purpose of your belief?

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The poem calls for a quick attention to beliefs.Belief system is a set of manually supportive beliefs. The belief of such system can be classified as religious, philosophic, political, and ideological or a combination of all. These are also based on conditions, experiences, attitudes, values, truth, knowledge...Belief is a mental representation of an attitude positively oriented towards the likelihood of something being true.In the context of the poem of Olaide Jnr. He started by identifying Religion/Tradition as core. Religion covers the spiritual aspect while tradition covers the mythological aspect, ethnical religion and likes. The first five stanzas is about religious belief. In our religious world of today(Christianity/Islam) we can say whatever we are today is based on our belief and basically what has been working for us (our idol) as a people. Our belief(s) differs, some persons own a very strong stance towards theirs while some are lukewarm or indifferent.Tradition on the other hand comes with more scare, some people fear gods than God. The whole contradiction is enough to split a nation, the freedom of ideology/belief is what saved many.In conclusion the poem creates an understanding of the diversities and tells the readers the purpose of belief and finally to know YOUR BELIEF BECOMES YOUR REALITY.Now, what in your belief do you believe?
