Sonnet Xi: Do Not Fall Asleep In These Arms Tonight Poem by Tanja Bulovic

Sonnet Xi: Do Not Fall Asleep In These Arms Tonight

Do not fall asleep in these arms tonight
I need them to heal you, I need them to
Guard you; oh, let me guide you through this night
That wants to take you and wants to use you
For its ends; let me make amends instead
Of you; here, with my head on your belly
Let me make a nest from my hair, ahead
Of the storm chasing the birds and yelling
Your name; let them find home where I would love
To dwell, in the swell of your chest, under
Your hands in defeat, between and above
The sheets too thin to save you from thunder

And if the dawn creeps in after them weeping
For you, I will tell her that you are sleeping
