Not So Gay Poetry Poem by Paul Brookes

Not So Gay Poetry

I don't write Gay poetry
as a little angst goes a long way,
a little spice or a little serenity.
what where's the space in my head I asked.

baring the soul, no that's not my style.
underdog and underprivileged that's more me
thread bear, a teddy bear with teeth.

sometimes writing poetry joie de vivre
or may be que sera sera.
sometimes a dollop of good old fashioned emotion,
as I listen to the screams from the closet.

if the mood takes.
a hot curry burning the top off words
little snips and snaps of haiku.
smooth mashed potatoes are too homogeneous
and bland no matter how much cream you add.

oh you're so funny, no really, she says
a little Gay maybe.
but then when she flipped the diversity card
you never thought of gender and neither did I.

so I say a little old fashioned, I meant by gay, little g not Gay big G.
happy happy happy hop little rabbit 1930s sort of gay

so what have against Gays then?
nothing I say.
the silence is palpable,
cogs grind and the brain ticks over.

I wait for the come back
you're just homophobic, that's what you are.
I wonder as she walks away whether she noticed the irony
of my rainbow flag button hole.

our cloth is as different as yours
all colours, all races, I say
and leave her to her confusion..

so I don't write Gay poetry
cause no one reads it anyway.
