We Are What We Are Poem by Paul Brookes

We Are What We Are

Rating: 5.0

sorry you are so underwhelmed,
the poet crashes from pedestal to earth
so a simple matter, we impact then smash, shall we rise again?

a million splinters of marble gleaming white,
shattered into mica shards splitting the light causing
rainbows to refract our thoughts
we are but spectres at Michaelangelo's feast.

chisels smooths wrinkles
stop! 'no entry' genius at work.
takes a master magician to make stone flow and float so.

three tons look feather light and
as she sheds stony tears, her hands gentle upon divinity,
agony cast in every line, she weeps, gentle pieta.

the face ghastly in death falls limp and lifeless
she holds the weight of the world in her fragile lap
and the light dies extinguished and exsanguinated

so forgive me for not soaring to such heights
but I a mere rough mortal can only aspire.
so sorry you are so underwhelmed.

this masterpiece is very strong and well penned, the imagery and idea is very unique and poetic, deep with many devices linked to the universe and world, but in the end that is what we call the human world in the Paul's point of view.. It deserves 10+ and it goes on my fav list well done
