Little Chick Poem by Franklin Spriggs

Little Chick

Oh little chick, all asleep in our nest,
When you came forth, we hoped for the best,
All warm and cozy in our nest you do lay,
Waiting for the moment, the hour, the day.

We wait and wonder, all asleep in your shell,
Hoping and praying, that all will be well
In anticipation all our hopes did come true
On that lovely day, your beak did break thru

Over the days, the weeks, you nurtured and grew
Hoping always for your desire, the sky so blue
As you grew and nourished, a desire in your heart
it was up to us, to make your first start.

From day to day, your wings you did try
Longing more and more, to head for the sky
Preparing for the day, your first flight you must take
Leaving our nest, your own you must make.

Hours turned to days, days into weeks,
Your soft fluffy down, so warm so sleek
Upon the side of the nest, all eager to go
You leaped into the air, what a glorious show.

The day is at hand, it's time for you to leave,
Our hearts sorely broken, the loneliness I can't perceive,

As your wings fade into the distance, our eyes tearfully swell,
Into the future you've flown, but all will be well.

The nest is empty now, away you have flown
Into another tree, to make a life of your own
Here we set in loneliness, how long, who can tell
But our hearts are always with you,
Our chick, our daughter, Michelle.
