Earth Physics Poem by Yiyan Han

Earth Physics

Rating: 5.0

Oh computers
Please tell us why the Moon
Is shy not to show the other side of her pretty face
Also the reasons for perfect ratios
Of diameters and distances
Of the Moon to the Earth to the Sun

If a computer could do simulations
More than 2 trillion times
One would then explain the origin of universe
Perhaps
And in one's dreams

The more of looking
Deep into the universe
The more shock and awed by God's hands
The theory of Big Bang
Oh yes
I hear a brain has just exploded
Bang bang bang

Perhaps quantum computing might help? ? I tried to explain how to calculate the distance of stars from the earth once to somebody whose religious beliefs dictated the earth was created 8,000 years ago. I couldn't convince them.

As a causal foundation, the big bang is both too far away and not far enough away from the livable world we inhabit. The hungry mind still hankers for an explanation: Why Mom?

Those silent bangs you hear are enacted in the minds of our cosmologists, Their inquires into the source of everything have led them to a massive explosion. (With a few billion more simulations, I wonder if scientists will aslo be able to predict an end?)

Yes, we have a very lucky relation with our moon. There is sufficient regularity in its movements, so we can predict tides, but according to the third body problem, the moon-sun-earth relation will produce movements that will never repeat exactly over time. We will certainly not be condemned to a repetitious future.

So good to see a poem on physics - a rare subject for a poem. Oh computers Please tell us why the Moon Is shy not to show the other side of her pretty face This is such a pertinent question. A very sweet poem on perfect ratios. Enjoyed reading it Yiyan.

Pleased to know you've enjoyed reading this. Physics is everywhere though most people find it a difficult subject ;)

Those who believe in God have nothing to fear from the scientific mind- may they never give up trying to discover the how of us. The why of us. What they come up with is very interesting and sometimes mind-blowing but quite often some other brain walks up and changes the face of science with a new nugget of knowledge! Love your poem!

Thank you, Susan. Scientific minds are important but their limits are obvious.
