Constant Reflection Poem by Preston Simmons

Constant Reflection

We have traded the ancient ways
Of stone and papyrus sheets
For tablets of glass,
And buildings of steel.
We have the same amount of time to do more,
Yet feel as though it is less.
At least bread is constant.

Does the modern eye see a reflection?
Or are we looking too far ahead?
Do we see our own reflections?
Who we were, are,
And can become?
I stop in front of a mirror
From time to time
And look for each of those reflections.

I was offered simplicity
In the form of bread,
But instead
Turned to complexity,
And stared at my tablet of glass.
Voices poured from its speakers.
Breaking news, Debates, commercials;
Try this, buy that.
I reflected
On who I have become
Because of this communication.
Then there was silence
Because I was eating bread.
