Birthdays Poem by Jim Yerman

Birthdays

As the members of our family grow up, some eventually move away
so when we do all come together…we celebrate that day.

For me…nothing is more precious…nothing more enthralls
than when the house is filled with family and laughter bounces off the walls.

Take yesterday for instance… we all gathered to sing that birthday tune
and celebrate the members of our family whose birthdays fall in June.

As they blew out their candles… that moment slipping by so fast…
I thought about how quickly another year has passed.

The years seem to be moving by much faster now…sometimes I think it is a shame
Children growing…everything changing…nothing remains the same.

But then we celebrate birthdays…and with the family gathered here
I remember all the good times we've had throughout the year.

I think about their journey as we sing their birthday song
and I am thankful I've had the privilege…to be her…to sing along.

Yes, I think about all the wonders they've experienced…that they'd never felt before
and I smile thinking about the wonders their next year has in store.

It's a good thing candles represent the years we've lived
and not the memories we make…
because there would never be enough room
for all our memories on one cake…

So now, when it comes to my next birthday…I won't be counting years…instead…
I'll be counting all my blessings…
and wondering what happiness lies ahead.
