At The Blues Poem by Anji Carter

At The Blues

Throbbing beat with pounding sounds,
Vibrating, pulsating.
Smokey shadows of figures, just silhouettes, dancing.
Shafts of light pierce smoke-filled darkness,
Hazy patterns of atmosphere....
....'Blues Dance'
Music pounds up through your body,
Fills you - beats against your breast
Music, life's blood, pulses from your heart that's music
chases courses through your veins.
Young man 'toasting' tell your stories
Chanting on your rhythmic ocean,
Modern day minstrels - poetry in motion,
1980's style, at the....
....'Blues Dance'.
New culture with old roots.
The tree that was stripped will blossom again.
It's bursting with buds from the scars that are healing.
Africa is returning!
Back to the bodies from which it was driven.
Stolen by slavery.
Resurrecting the feelings 'Time's' abuses were concealing.
'Sounds man's' controlling,
The music is flowing.
The 'Sound-System's' playing,
And Africa is growing another young tree...
..at the 'Blues Dance'!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I have a large number of friends of Afro-Caribbean extraction who used to hold the most amazing dances that incorporated Sound-System competitions. These contests involved at least two or sometimes more Reggae D.J's playing various cuts of records, each playing sounds that were rarer than those of his colleague(s) . This meant that anyone lucky enough to get into one of these dance/parties, would be granted an opportunity to hear music (sounds) that they might never hear again anywhere else. I loved to dance, and I have always had a deep love of music, in particular Reggae, Jazz and Rhythm and Blues, so for me this poem describing the sensations that were all around me, is one of my favourites.
