American Elections - Campaigns Poem by Bernedita Rosinha Pinto

American Elections - Campaigns

Rating: 4.5

American elections campaigns
they begin one year in advance
as candidates keep screaming
convincing voters
that each one of them is better
than the other.
And though the street lights are the same
the pensioners are the same
the senior citizens have got older
the toddlers have started to go to school
over the past four years;
yet in that race now
for the presidential position
so many promises uttered
so many campaigns held
so much expenditure revolves;
yet undaunted by criticism
unstoppable by rivalry
candidates in their own vibrancy sway voters
to ponder well over their choices.
And while worried youth look around
for work and entertainment,
while vehicles wait
for traffic-signals to change
and speed away,
while joggers run
to keep up their physical fitness,
all these people continue to anticipate
and await for a change
a better and a greater America.
Suddenly as they are walking
they pause to hear a familiar voice
they know it's him
as he says - My name is Trump
and I want to be the next President;
around another corner
is a lady's voice that says- I am Hillary
and I am definitely worth your vote
to be at the White House again;
and though those speeches
of candidates are loud and clear
one opposing the other
one derogating the other's capability
even publicizing other's private life,
yet no candidate ever wants to give up
his dream of becoming a president
that neither Nixon, Roosevelt nor Abe
must have ever had the need
to expose or explain
or to debate as much
everywhere they went
to gain their votes
but the candidates of today
are outright, outspoken,
and sometimes a little too outrageous,
that sometimes one wonders
is this democracy
in its true colors
in its true sense,
in its true taste,
in its true momentum?

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The tenets of democracy such as freedom of speech and expression were not meant to derogate the people governed by their democracy but these freedoms were guaranteed so as to harness the free exchange of ideas and expressions meant to enhance the ambit of the concept of democracy. And the freedom of speech and expression should be utilized in order to benefit the people and to act in the interest of their welfare, rather than provoke downfall of the candidates during election season.
