A poem in memory of my wedding day
-Gayathri B. Seetharam
Twenty eight years ago, on one bright sunny day
There arose the dawn of a new day in my life
My husband and I were married to each other
In a glorious exchange of vows,
To cherish and to protect until death do us apart
And for better or for worse
And this in the Hindu way, meant that my man
Would see to it that he was forthcoming and would pay my bills
And I would do so too within my line of vision and capability
Bluebells as a man's consent to sharing his life with me
And roses for the lasting love between us
Embellished with ladies lace which brought my feminist femininity all these years
Decorated with gardenias proclaiming the scent of love
Would be a part of our lives
I baked pineapple cake with pineapple icing
For I was told that it signified the goodness of cake
And as I reasoned it out it is because it is delicious
As sex is and this is a given for a man but it has been so in my life
And might it be noted that the male organ chooses to cajole a woman's desire
With its larger than life appearance
And this is the reason that women prefer taking big bites when hungry
For they have to get at the bread
And take it all in but men on the other hand, nibble and take small bites
Of the hidden source of ecstasy apart from finding out the inner spirit of love
From the usual route to a crescendo in sexual music.
