A New Life Poem by Susan Ash

A New Life

In my mind I visualise
The bare rooms
That await me.
I could so easily
Go either way …..

See that I have come this far
Only to be left with nothing.
An empty shell of a life that
Started with such high hopes.
I tried so hard yet
It was never enough.
Others took from me and now
I have nothing left to give.

Or

See a new life,
Unencumbered by the
Accumulated bric-a-brac.
A choice to bring in only
That which pleases me.
Create for myself the peace
And harmony I seek.
On my own, yet not alone.

In my mind I visualise
The bare rooms
That await me.
I could so easily
Go either way …..

This poem chimes with my experience except that bare rooms didn't await me and the experience of breaking up what I had has in the end been a salutary one that has released me and reminded me of how strong I can be. But before I left my married home I had panicky fears like this and this poem expresses them directly and simply. It's a well written piece of work.
