A Floating Cloud Poem by Bharati Nayak

A Floating Cloud

Rating: 5.0

Ah! It is not rainy season
From where fell
The rain drops!
It is thirsty Summer
Long lonely roads simmer
Butfrom where
fell the rain drops
I looked up
And found
One floating cloud
Showering blessings
From above
Oh I know, I know
I was waiting for it
All these years!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Daniel Brick wrote a fantastic comment on this poem which he sent me through mail on 18th June 2019, I would like to share- -
'As long as I can remember the MONSOON in South Asia has fascinated me And your poem is very special to me because as a native of that region you know the Monsoon intimately.
But in this poem it is not monsoon season; it is set in that long time period when the heat rises relentlessly but there is no refreshing rain yet. B-U-T there is one floating cloud -
just one - it will not put an end to hot spell. And this is where your poem turns inward - that one floating cloud is a kind of miracle, not in the supernatural sense, but in a purely
natural sense. The "miracle" is an event in your consciousness: thisone cloud symbolizes all the future rain clouds of the monsoon season, so you can mentally "feel" that future relief.
In the last lines you reflect on the positive effects of hope and patience, but indirectly and quietly. In some mysterious way your waiting on earth participates with the rescuing cloud
in the sky. Your mood is the "wise passiveness" Wordsworth celebrated. And your poem has the added virtue of being complaint-free. You accept the hot days, knowing refreshing days
will come at there proper time. But on this day you are given a small and welcome assurance of the relief to come.

(I'm reminded by your poem of a beautiful passage in the Qur'an: Abraham and the Lord God are talking in the manner of their special friendship, when Abraham notices a dead bird. "Lord, give that bird a new life." God replies, "Do you doubt my power to do so? " And Abraham says, "No, Lord, I know your power. I want you to reassure my heart." And at that very second the bird
lifts into flight and disappears. You see, God validates Abraham's purely human need for reassurance. He knows our hearts are often troubled, He made us that way so that we seek His help. But the task of reassuring human hearts is NOT just God's work: we humans can do it for each other, and we do, when a mother consoles a hurt child, when a man gives his friend
confidence, when a stranger does a good deed for someone, OR when a poet writes a poem like your "A Floating Cloud, " and the reader learns he or she can live happily with
the spirit of"wise passiveness." Excelsior!)xxxx'

A second visit of this marvellous poem makes me feel in addition to that I have already commented that off-season clouds though barren are capable of dropping down a bit of waster on its way.perhaps like a gift. The cloud can be a herald of the coming rainy season too
