You Poem by Seamus O' Brian

You

Rating: 5.0

you
a single word
you
but there is a someone on the other side
of that word,
that thought,
that perhaps
is the one soul among faceless billions
who ballasts my heart with the weight
of a battleship

you
sometimes my accountant
sometimes my neighbor
sometimes my mother
who left the door unlocked
with cookies on the table
made from borrowed eggs.
You.
such a versatile word.

you.
yes, you.
you, who knew
the door was unlocked
who put your foot
on my chest while I lay
on the floor and giggled
and you who thought
how simple it would be
to crush me with
a single push.

you.
you, whose departure
was a vacuum,
the vortex of my world

you.
a single thrust of my language,
and anonymous becomes object,
reader becomes complicit
you becomes me.

fiction becomes
memory.

How simple it would be to crush you/me with a single push. And you become me. It's all about perception. I found that line compelling. Thanks.

neal, this is a great concept! i think of martin buber's i-thou i-it contrast. and it's like you to explore what is so basic, so important, but usually passed over. glen

This poem is so fascinatingly original and interesting. And how it flows! It takes us to inner spaces that nobody knows, private spaces that grow thru the poets words but that we can see and feel and get to know. A most satisfying and unusual experience. A piece of great poetic value and deep human stature.
