Bri, the syllabic constraint is not chiseled in stone. The Japanese haikus use concrete imagery, nature and animals, and allude to the seasons. Try reading Basho. He's one of the best Japanese artists, and William Packard's book "The Art of Poetry Writing."

i like this but 'The first line is 5 syllables. The second line is 7 syllables. The third line is 5 syllables like the first.' is what Google tells me. bri ;)
