The Yearning Poem by Alexander Beebe

The Yearning

The tables set the candles lit
the children sound asleep.
A long awaited rendezvous
romantic dinner set for two.
Before the first bite hits their lips
their eyes connect together.
The yearning of their hearts and minds
the food grows cold, the couch on fire.

His 68 convertible he bought
when they were young
A hobby he developed
to try and make it run.
She sees him lying on the ground
in faded jeans and soiled hands
She says the back seat needs more work
he washes up, the top comes down.

It’s simple moments that they take that keep their passion flowing
A well timed smile upon his face, a kiss she gives, his warm embrace.
What matters most through out their life, it comes from years of learning
Tough times will find them now and then, but never lose the yearning.

Much older now, the kids have left
the days go by much slower.
They sit together on the couch
her head upon his shoulder.
What time is it she asks of him
as if it makes a difference.
The leathers worn in that back seat
I think it’s time we mend it! !

It’s simple moments that they take that keep their passion flowing
A well timed smile upon his face, a kiss she gives, his warm embrace.
What matters most through out their life, it comes from years of learning
Tough times will find them now and then, but never lose the yearning, never lose the yearning.
