Poeta Nascitur, Non Fit Poem by Erin Cowart

Poeta Nascitur, Non Fit

I am a soul to whom the universe sings
Morning and night
Every sight and sound
Begging for release

The stars, the trees
My cat, the rain
Washing machines and fuzzy socks
Birds in the sky
The smell of earth and wind

I wonder what the universe will sing today

What song will take hold of my pen
And spill on to the page
As if it has always been there

For me there is no other way
I am the words and melody
The entirety of creation my muse
Hear my song

And in the brief moments
When the world does not speak
And I think that it is finished with me
That I have written all beauties
All sorrows, all lives
And nothing remains

I am reminded that even
Silences are beautiful too

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
My poetry comes pouring out of me, often inspired by just normal, everyday experiences and their beauty. Some days nothing comes and I have the worst writer's block and am afraid that I will never be able to write another word again. This poem serves as a reminder to me and other poets and writers that sometimes the best inspiration is the silence if we are only willing to listen.
