Palakkaad 1-The Palakkaadan Breeze Poem by Geeta Radhakrishna Menon

Palakkaad 1-The Palakkaadan Breeze

Rating: 5.0

As I stood in the courtyard
Of my ancestral house in Palakkad;
A sweet-scented breeze blew,
On my face, touching, caressing my whole being
With an undefinable coolness, and
With an uninhibited, loving embrace.

A pleasant feeling enveloped me. Ah!
It was my native Palakkaadan breeze!
So cool, refreshing and rejuvenating!
I recognized this loving breeze
As my old childhood friend. So wonderful!
I had re-united with the Palakkadan breeze after many years!

The Palakkaadan breeze had much to talk.
I was overjoyed and thrilled
To enter into a conversation
With this fragrant breezy presence.
The breeze gently whispered into my ears,
With a voice, so sweet and clear!

I heard the voice of my beloved parents,
My generous grandfather who shared
His wealth, goodness with the entire village,
My pretty grandmother who told me many stories,
My royal ancestors whose prayers protected me,
Each moment, every step that I took in my life.

As I was enveloped by the cool breeze again,
All my royal ancestors appeared in front of me.
They reminded me of my origin, my roots,
My native soil, my fragrant, familiar mud
'Come back! Come back ' They whistled.
I must return home to my Palakkaadan breeze!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This picture with the peacock taking her evening walk along the compound wall of our house was clicked by my daughter Radhika. The peacock was not bothered that i stood there.I spent my vacation in Kerala, my native land, in my ancestral home in Palakkaad during December 2022 and early January 20223. I have a special affinity for the place and the breeze that is so unique. I remembered my parents and grandparents. It was a trip full of nostalgia and happy memories of my childhood in Kerala. Back in Poem Hunter after three weeks, I hope to continue with my series on Vincent Van Gogh and other poems. Once again, I would like to wish all my PH friends, a wonderful, healthy, happy and friendly year ahead. With warmest regards to all of you. Stay blessed.

I agree with Rajnish, that the 'photo' looks like a painting, a nice painting. It really looks more like a painting (to me) than a photo.

Nostalgic feelings can not be easily expressed in words...it is too emotional as the thoughts of nostalgia live and spring from our soul...beautiful poem with a tribute to your parents and others...liked very much Geeta
