Maternity Ward Attackers In Afghanistan Poem by Daya Nandan

Maternity Ward Attackers In Afghanistan

They are monsters that have lost their humanity,
Terrorists that are consumed by pure evil and insanity,
They murdered 24 mothers, babies and children in cold blood,
Bullet wounds through flesh that caused a reddish flood,

A bullet riddled maternity ward with bodies on the ground,
Unborn babies were shot before they could make their first crying sound,
It is so heartbreaking to know that there are such monsters on this earth,
Demons in human form that cannot appreciate a life's worth,

Terrorists that committed such atrocities to babies, children and mothers,
That heartlessly killed the loved one of many grieving siblings and fathers,
Soon, the security forces came to fight off the terrorist attack,
To stop the militants that have embraced the cruellest track,

Bullets were exchanged for hours in a crossfire of life and death,
Walls were sprayed with bullets and blood as some drew their last breath,
There were explosions and gunfire ricocheted around the building,
Life that took months for some of the mothers care for had faded to nothing,

Amidst the chaos and carnage there was a midwife and a mother in labor hidden from sight,
And somehow the mother suppressed her pain of labor to remain safe from the fight,
The midwife conducted the delivery with very little sound,
While beyond their sheltered room, bullets were flying as bodies fell to the ground,

A baby was born in the hidden corner of the ward,
Using her hands, the midwife somehow cut off the baby's umbilical cord,
At the end, all the gunmen were finally shot dead by the security forces,
The end for cold hearted gunmen that caused so much pain and losses.
