Lost Senses Poem by Tom Allport

Lost Senses

Rating: 4.5

A prodigal son
Finally returns to see
His eighty eight year old
Always loving mum
Who is now struggling
To make ends meet
She lives on her own
And has been diagnosed
With the onset of dementia
But she still recognises
Her only son
She is so glad to see him
Now that he has matured
Into a seemingly
Well mannered man
She also hopes he has
Finally come to his senses
To come home to live
And settle down
Till he lets slip
His thoughtful plan
Because of her
Losing her senses
He has made
What he thinks
A sensible decision
To put her
Into a nice care home.

Sounds so sensible but where is the sensitivity?

A touching and very poignant poem on the choices we children sometimes have to make regarding our parents. I can relate to this and the memories of my own mother in a nursing home came coming back. Thank you for writing this.
