Looking Back Poem by Bryan Sefton

Looking Back

Rating: 5.0

Long ago, when grass grew above my head
And trees plucked clouds out of the sky, a mile high
God spat lightening and spoke in thunder
Making me wonder what had made this patient figure lose his temper so
He'd held swallows on I invisible threads
Making them dance above my head
With lightening turns and graceful dives and-l don't know,
It just seemed that way to me

And there was a pond on the edge of a wood
With fish, like cows chewing their cud
With ceaseless jaws that seemed to say
'No, don't bother me today. Play somewhere else'
And deep in the silence of the moss covered trees
Sheltered from the sun and the occasional breeze
Cathedral like our voices sang
And in our empty hands our guns went bang!
And in our hearts a priceless wealth

Far away, on a sunny day, the summer hay said
'Here I am! Come and play in me! '
And we dived in it and burrowed in it
Threw it to the sun and wove pure gold from it
And a million dreams filled that young boys head
As he lay in the sun on that sweet smelling bed
And a bee on the pollen run paused to stare
Till a call from the hive ran away with it
And the smell of hay smells as good today
But I won't let me play in it
