Life Poem by Sky Welch

Life

Rating: 2.5

The limit to your existence.
Noone knows how long or short it is.
Noone can predict when you'll reach your end of the rope.
If you waste your life on dwelling on the past,
You may never make it to the bottom of the cliff that your rope hangs from.
If you waste it on building towards the future,
You'll hit the bottom too fast and too hard.
Do not think of how you got to the top in the first place.
You'll only find that you put yourself there be fault.
Instead study the animal that walk about the earth.
For most of them have already made it to the bottom,
But at their own pace, and they still have rope left to follow.
For they niether dwell on the past nor look to the future.
They live life as it is because they already know what is to come.

An animal does not already know what is to come in the sense that it can thoroughly contemplate the future. For example, a squirrel will gather nuts for the upcoming winter, not because it believes that the future is cold, but because it realizes that soon, "now" is to be cold. Think about that.

I liked this free verse poem of yours. The verses flow naturally like a stream. I am amazed to think how effortlessly you have understood and conveyed the philosophy of life in this poem. From a 17 year old as you are, this is simply superb! I am glad to see that you like to read poems. You stand 7th, as of now, among the Members (of PH) who read most number of poems. Very good! But it's a pity that you have read none of mine.
