Jagunlabi Poem by Oluwatosin Thomas

Jagunlabi

Rating: 5.0

I
Bring forth the cowries, dice it on Opele,
Lend me the magical crystal of Nehatade,
Lest we know what the future holds.
Give me three stands of the ancient oratory pestle,
Ignite the ancient fire of unity,
That we may dine and wine from the pot of wisdom.
II
Summorn the knight of the seven kingdoms,
Knights of owo, modakeke, benin, oyo and others,
That rides their carts in the midst of turbulence,
To relay my message to JAGUNLABI,
Before the end of our tides closes at the sunset.
III
Tell him that in the days of Olugbon,
And the season of Aresa,
The fields sprout fruits,
The sun brings out its tidings,
And the beauties lay to bed.
IV
Remind him of the circles of Jagunlabi,
The divination spreads its bad news,
Festival swims in the midst of Egungun massacre,
Egunugun ablaze the skies picking its carcass from our deserted lands,
Lagelu wept, wailed of his failed hunting journey.
V
Jagunlabi, ward off not our visions from our dreams,
Do not cut our cores with the blade of your attire,
Cover not our clarity with your swaying garment,
Dim not the light of our soothsayers.
VI
Orunmila, we beckon you to this present time,
Esu Odara, our spectator of this realm,
Take heed and honour your words,
Lest, we bite!

An expertly worded portrayal of an African divinity vivacious with spiritual insight. Beautiful work of art nicely put together. Thanks for sharing, Thomas. Remain enriched.
