"Tsuru", or Japanese crane, in English, is the nation bird of Japan, and bearer of good luck, as you may know, as at the time of the birth of a child, gifts given at that time with "tsuru" rapping paper.

I would see them at times in Japanese coastal waters, and fresh-water lakes in and around Sapporo, where I once lived and taught at Tokai University—Sapporo.
